Frequently Asked Questions

How much tax do I pay on betting winnings in Kenya?
Since July 2025, Kenya charges a 5% withholding tax on betting withdrawals under the Finance Act 2025. This replaced the previous 20% rate. Additionally, a 12.5% excise duty is applied to your initial stake (deposit). Both taxes are automatically deducted by licensed bookmakers regulated by the BCLB.
Is betting tax deducted automatically?
Yes. Licensed bookmakers (regulated by the Betting Control and Licensing Board - BCLB) automatically deduct the 5% withholding tax from your withdrawal amount before sending it to your M-Pesa or bank account. You do not need to file separately with KRA for this tax.
What changed in the Kenya betting tax in 2025?
The Finance Act 2025 reduced the withholding tax on betting winnings from 20% to 5%, effective July 2025. The excise duty on stakes was maintained at 12.5%. This made Kenya one of the more favorable tax regimes for bettors in East Africa.
Do I pay tax on losing bets in Kenya?
The 5% withholding tax is only applied to withdrawals (winnings), not losses. However, the 12.5% excise duty is applied to your deposit/stake regardless of whether you win or lose. This means there is always a cost to placing a bet in Kenya.
How does the accumulator (multi-bet) tax work?
For accumulators, the tax calculation is the same as single bets. The 5% withholding tax is applied to your total withdrawal amount (gross winnings from all legs combined), and the 12.5% excise duty is applied to your original stake. The combined odds of all legs determine your gross winnings.
Are M-Pesa withdrawal fees separate from betting tax?
Yes. M-Pesa charges its own transaction fees on top of the betting taxes. Safaricom's M-Pesa fees depend on the withdrawal amount and range from KES 0 (under KES 100) to KES 300+ (over KES 70,000). These fees are charged by Safaricom, not by the bookmaker or KRA.
